when my project manager called me to his cabin last week, i was hoping it wouldn't be anything devastative because usually visits to his cabin is equivalent to reliving hiroshima/nagasaki experiences. did i say relive? how is it relive when i was not even there in the 1st place, sheesh, confusing, anyways moving on, i enter the cabin with that usual expression i put up 'its not me, i didnt do it!!' but my manager was all smiles and i was kinda taken aback, this was not what i had prepared for and then i noticed that there's some guy sitting infront of him, a young chap. My manager says 'ah yes eric, come in, come in....meet james ( the first thought that flashed in my mind was "is he a double '0'??") he's our new telecom engineer (wow!! so exciting...im so thrilled..not!!!). i extend my hand 'nice to meet you hand shakes done, introductions done and my boss tells him 'james if you need to know anything about the project or anything else, eric will guide you etc etc'. i hate being the mentor whenever a new guy joins the team, its like a recap of whatever has happened so far.
well he went through the project specs for a day or two, hardly bothered me much, till thursday/weekend, he comes upto me during lunch break when theres hardly anyone in office, he seemed hesitant initially but then he fought his mental fears and popped the question 'eric, uhm, do you know any dance bars in abu-dhabi?'
i was like 'what the hell!! how long have you been in this country?! 4days?! and your allready on the hunt for a dance bar?! neverthless theres quite a few in the building opposite le royal meridian'
he seemed more than excited and pestered me to tell him more about it, since i had not been there (honest confession) i told him i have absolutely no idea but try your luck and pick one randomly. he nodded his head and trodded away happily. i could literally see a cloud form over his head with chics in ghagras dancing and man did i notice a small dance step in his walk, he was allready 'shaking his leg'.
the weekend came by and flew like it always does, the candid conversation i had with the item number ecstatic james bond was long gone from my grey cells and i came back for work on sunday sulking as usual being the first working day of the week. james came in late that day and somehow during lunch break the dance bar convo popped in my head and i went upto him 'hey you went on thursday or friday?' he seemed petrified that i asked the question and says 'yea man, i was hoping you wouldnt ask me about it, i went there with my friend and we got in the elevator and punched in a random floor, purely instinctive, as soon as the elevator doors slid open, we saw two bars on that floor, we hit the one on the right, being as unnoticeable as possible we creeped to a table in the corner, so that we could camouflage with the surroundings, be as unnoticeable as possible'
i cut in 'haha...sounds like you guys had planned it all out, so had a good time then?' james gave me a stare "good time it seems....dude...we were just settling in and beginning to take in the magnitude of the place when my friend says 'hey look at that budha(old man) throwing 500buck notes infront of the stage, haha, what a clown!!' i looked at him and seeing his gimmicks, it was hard not to laugh and next to him there was another guy trying out a dhoom2 step which looked more like he was making chappatis...we almost fell off our chairs laughing when i noticed that it was our project manager who was throwing the notes!!! and the chapatti maker swaying with a mug of beer in his hand was one of the h.r managers!!!i pulled my friend and ran out of the place, i couldnt take it'
i burst out laughing, the thought of my boss throwing money in a dance bar seemed so difficult to imagine contrary to his dictative attire!! its totally cool considering that he also needs a break, but the only problem is that now whenever my boss calls me a chuckle comes to me naturally as an image of him dancing to sheila ki jawani pops in my head.
p.s thank you farah khan, your sheila has spoiled my boss!! :P
